Ewe feed (May 2007)
Pregnant and lactating ewes in the barn are being fed a mixture of
- 87.5% haycrop silage
- 12.5% cracked corn.
The haycrop silage contains 40% dry matter and 21% crude protein on a dry matter basis. This is more protein than our sheep need, but this is the only haycrop silage available to us. The corn is added to increase the digetible carbohydrates and reduce the protein level to a slightly more acceptable level.
The nutrient composition of this feed is given in a FeedForm report.
The ewes also have free-choice access to our vitamin E-fortified mineral mix:
This mix is formulated based upon the salt content of the Agway Sheep Mineral Mix to supply 200 IU vitamin E per day, assuming the ewes consume salt at a rate of about 1 oz (28 g) per day.
